Beach House: “Silver Soul”
Outside Lands 2016. Sutro stage, nearing dusk. The fog rolled in and the sky was turning shades of sherbet. We slipped through the crowd and onto a little hill. The band had played a few songs and settled to a pause. The crowd in it’s quiet energy, waiting.
I heard birds chirping followed by this sigh of exalted relief from everyone around me when the first few notes played. It felt like I had been waiting for this song my entire life. You know the feeling, right? When the sound goes through the skin and you can feel it traveling like blood. The stage lights matched the dying sunset now in blue and purples. I felt sorry for anyone at this festival who was anywhere else than right here.
These tones will always eclipse the feeling of change for me. It was a time in my life when everything was on the brink. I was about to move across the world, leave my friends and family behind. Constantly wondering if I was making the right choice. That’s what I love about music. The ability it has to speak to you, to inspire and stir. That entire song takes me back to that feeling, those opening notes always electric.
